Trends For 2023

Updated: Feb 13, 2023

Jumping in to the New Year after the holiday break can be...discombobulating...sometimes it can be hard to know where to start. We can help!

To stir some inspiration for your year, here are 7 trends that we think will be taking 2023 by storm:

1. Rich, inviting colour schemes featuring saturated jewel tones like: Deep Indigo, Bold Cobalt, Burnt Orange and Sweet Honeycomb

The colours in our surroundings play a big role in how we feel and react. Warm, saturated jewel tones are the perfect mix for a peaceful mind and a lively message.

These complimentary colours enhance the bright vibrancy of the day and invoke the calm serenity of the night, bringing out the energy in the other and making for a confident and spirited atmosphere. They are the perfect colours to accent

an event space, brighten up an outfit, or pair side by side in an artwork or brand display.

2. Pantone Colour of the Year - Viva Magenta

We have to mention the Pantone colour of 2023, Viva Magenta. This bold shade is brave and fearless, rooted in nature and derived from the red family. A "nuanced crimson red tone that presents a balance between warm and cool". Vibrating with vim and vigor, this colour exudes "strength, animated joy and optimistic celebration".

"It is an animated red that revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation and self-expression without restraint, an electrifying, and a boundless shade that is manifesting as a stand-out statement. PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta welcomes anyone and everyone with the same verve for life and rebellious spirit. It is a color that is audacious, full of wit and inclusive of all....a transformative red tone capable of driving design to create a more positive future."

We are so excited to embrace this gorgeous shade in all things events, design and fashion this year. It's the perfect compliment to punch up all the rich jewels that are set to take over everyone's palettes.

3. Prioritizing Care

Starting a new year is all about getting back out in the world with a go-getter attitude and achieving our goals, but especially after the last few years we have learned that taking care of ourselves and those closest to us needs to be top of the list.

This year we are treating ourselves, sharing that feeling with others, embracing words of affirmation, taking care of our bodies and gifting ourselves the time to relax and rejuvenate before Spring brings back colour and life to the world.

We recommend spending some time around nature or nature-inspired decor and wellness elements including candles, plants, trees and wooden motifs. Move your body then get cozy and create the perfect vibes to take advantage of some well-deserved "me" or "us" time, it's the time of year for staying in and getting warm in soft and comfy sweatsuits, oversized jackets and fluffy socks.

We take care of ourselves so we have the ability to take care of others...Share the zen and give your loved ones a gift from the heart. Need ideas? Try: an at home spa day, a fun group dance or fitness class, order a cozy sweatsuit (get matching ones with your bestie or partner for extra fun!), bake some delicious cookies and play games with your pals on a rainy afternoon. 2023 is about taking care, sharing the love and nurturing relationships.

4. Gorpcore

Gorpcore is derived from a colloquial term used by hikers, "Good Ol' Raisins and Peanuts", or GORP as Gen Z now calls it. Over the last few years it has developed as a popular fashion trend that is both vibrant and practical, consisting of:

  • Functional outdoor wear - think tracksuits, windbreakers, fanny packs and puffer vests, but with an edge of fashion through unique patterns, colours, cuts and playful silhouettes.

  • Layers of bold, breathable base pieces paired with daring and voluminous outerwear.

  • Enhancing body shapes using smart design to give billowy layers a twist by cropping, cinching or accessorizing with sparkly jewels (or bejewels).

  • Bright colours and proud brand logos taking centre stage in practical every-day essentials.

  • Groovy, nature-inspired colour palettes that reference back to what we see occurring naturally, like sun rises, sun sets, lush forests, supple beaches and a rainbow of florals.

"It’s clothes, made for being outside—inspired by what you see outside." as Marc Richardson so fantastically puts it in this Grailed article.

Who What Wear describes Gorpcore as embodying "outdoorsy joie de vivre" and a trend thats "practicality and functionality has allowed consumers to enjoy the outdoors in comfort and style" which is something we can definitely get behind, as Vancouverites we are stoked to adopt any trend that is warm, functional and bright to give some life to the grey, rainy days.

5. Y2K is back!

Oh, the 2000's! A dazzling era of being Playful, Bold and Fun! Spice Girls and Britney topped the charts accompanied by a myriad of Boy Band fandoms, sing-along power anthems and Lindsay Lohan at the top of her film game. Miley is still body-doubles with Hannah Montana and Hilary Duff was not complete without her sassy cartoon subconscious (any other Lizzy McGuire fans in the house?)...What a time to be alive! and we are all about bringin' it Back To You, S Club Style in 2023.

For us, this trend represents a simpler, more playful time. Y2K carries a nostalgic feeling that is vibrant, confident and adventurous. During a time of boundless change and daring ideas, 2000's style was scintillating and unstoppable.

"YK2 fashion embodies everything good about the 2000s sans the growing pains, social climate, and hyper-fixation on skinny bodies. It channels childhood nostalgia while leaving enough room to explore and modify it to your personal style.", says Maria Mikkelsen at The Coolist, she continues to say that Y2K "blends the pop culture of the millennium with bright colors and kitschy aesthetics to create an unapologetically maximalist look...The goal of Y2K fashion is to express yourself as vividly as possible."

Y2K is epitomized by an eclectic and personalized aesthetic - filled with denim and contradiction, velour tracksuits, studded belts, chunky heels and bedazzled jackets. This era was audacious and exploratory when it came to fashion while being unapologetic when it came to personal style. We just can't wait to see the modern take on it in events and fashion this year.

6. Maximalism

With the re-emergence of the 2000's comes the art of MORE IS MORE! Patterns on Patterns, brights on bolds, lace with leather and colour on colour is another way to say that this year is a year for fearless fashion and striking ideas.

Don't be afraid to style a few statement pieces in one show-stopping outfit, or provide multiple WOW moments at your next event. Maximalism is all about layering things strategically together in a beautiful and interesting way.

Embrace vibrant colours and prints on prints, stack jewellery and mix metals. Accessorize with belts and statement jackets, embrace the drama, load on the (p)leather, velvet and silk together, host a multi-dimensional experience, combine your love of food and good people with your love of music and fashion at your next event.

Enough is not enough; Nothing is too extra; Nothing is unhinged; You can have it all!

7. Coming Back Together

We've said it before, and we will say it again - after almost 3 years of pandemic-related separations, bringing people together is more important than ever.

2023 is the year of prioritizing social gatherings, get togethers, special events, team bonding and bringing people together after the wild times of the holidays and finally feeling normal(ish) post-panini-induced PTSD.

We are entering this year filled with optimism! Motivated and refreshed, ready to take on new challenges and fulfill new goals to inspire a new season of fun and memorable experiences.

Plus...February promises a month of cozy thoughts, bubbles baths and romantic feelings...stay tuned for some extra helpings of love coming soon!
